Braces/Orthodontic Treatment

Everyone wants to have the best set of teeth. If one has crowded teeth it can be corrected by an Orthodontist ( a Dentist that specializes in correcting position of the teeth, both upper and lower). Contrary to some common notion that orthodontics are only for adults or a specific age group, orthodontics is actually for all ages who need the treatment. Children would normally start orthodontic treatment at 12, but it is not unusual for young patients to get orthodontic treatment if the orthodontist detect early manifestations of crowding.  Orthodontics can both prevent  and treat crowding of teeth.

There are several types of Orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist may used fixed appliance (brackets attached or cemented on the front surfaces or back of the teeth), which you can not remove during the duration of treatment, or may use removable appliance which you can remove at home and clean.  Each person’s case is unique. It can not be generalized that only a certain age group can use either removable or fixed appliance. Your orthodontist will be able to determine the kind of treatment that will be used.

1.    See your preferred orthodontist
2.    Your orthodontist would normally perform visual inspection of mouth to check your teeth and gums and bite. 
3.    If he/she thinks that you may be a candidate for orthodontic treatment a panoramic and cephalometric x-rays of your jaw and head will be taken.
4.    Diagnostics casts and photo profiles will also be needed. 
5.    From these, you orthodontist will check the kind of malocclusion (improper bite) that you have.
6.    A treatment plan will be made for you, which will include the type of appliance that will be used for your case. 
7.    It is important that you should consider orthodontic treatment seriously and commit yourself to work hand and hand with your orthodontist to achieve the best results.
